Shrewsbury School is one of England's great historic boarding schools, founded in 1552 and set on a spectacular 110-acre site in a loop of the River Severn on the edge of the county town. Named Independent School of the Year 2020, it combines a strong intellectual tradition with a distinctive 'whole person' educational philosophy articulated through four pillars: Intellective, Active, Expressive and Reflective. The school became fully co-educational in 2008 and now draws a broad cohort of day and boarding pupils aged 13–18, retaining the immersive community feel of a classic English boarding school while modernising its culture and pastoral provision.
Who thrives here
Curious, engaged pupils who want more than exam results — those who will throw themselves into sport, music, drama, or outdoor pursuits alongside their studies will thrive here. The school suits both confident self-starters and those who need encouragement to find their niche, provided they are willing to be part of a busy, immersive community.

Common concerns
!Boarding fees are high and the school can feel expensive for extras beyond core fees
!As a school that has only recently become fully co-educational, some parents of girls note that the culture and some traditions still feel more tailored to boys
!Weekend activities and exeat arrangements require significant parental organisation for day pupils living at a distance
