School website

Shrewsbury School is one of England's great historic boarding schools, founded in 1552 and set on a spectacular 110-acre site in a loop of the River Severn on the edge of the county town. Named Independent School of the Year 2020, it combines a strong intellectual tradition with a distinctive 'whole person' educational philosophy articulated through four pillars: Intellective, Active, Expressive and Reflective. The school became fully co-educational in 2008 and now draws a broad cohort of day and boarding pupils aged 13–18, retaining the immersive community feel of a classic English boarding school while modernising its culture and pastoral provision.

  • Exceptional breadth of co-curricular life — rowing on the Severn, fives courts, a thriving drama and music scene, and one of the country's strongest CCF contingents
  • Strong academic results alongside a genuine ethos of championing the individual rather than ranking pupils by grades alone
  • Beautiful, well-resourced campus on a riverside site with high-quality boarding houses and a genuine sense of community
  • Recognised as Independent School of the Year 2020, reflecting consistent improvement in culture and outcomes under recent leadership

Who thrives here

Curious, engaged pupils who want more than exam results — those who will throw themselves into sport, music, drama, or outdoor pursuits alongside their studies will thrive here. The school suits both confident self-starters and those who need encouragement to find their niche, provided they are willing to be part of a busy, immersive community.
